Real-World Applications for Industrial 5G ASOCS’s robust industrial-grade connectivity is driving enterprise digitization

As ASOCS’s Networks are being increasingly deployed globally, below are some examples of Use Cases and real-world Case Studies. Click on the buttons provided to read more.

Industry 4.0 & 5.0 Use Case

Industry 4.0 & 5.0

Industrial 5G Networks have become the current bedrock for digitization in Smart Manufacturing supporting mission-critical operations, and offering secure, reliable, and flexible seamless coverage with stable high performance and low latency. An Industrial 5G Network can be leveraged to enable many features including GPAI-driven Positioning when combined with the Software as a Service (SaaS) business model, to provide ultimate ROI.

GPS Back-up Use Case

GPS Back-up

Hermes GPAI Positioning is used as a backup to service interruption to GPS where positioning is critical, such as in airport operations, with the additional benefit of seamless indoor & outdoor coverage on a single network.

Smart Logistics Use Case

Smart Logistics

Covering warehouses, smart retail, and airports, the main use cases include connectivity to centralized AI for orchestration and health and safety, single network coverage including indoor and outdoor campus, positioning of equipment, AMRs, and people utilizing a single Private 5G Network.

Industrial Robotics Use Case

Industrial Robotics

This is a subset of Industry 4.0. Industrial IoT (IIoT) requires an industrial-grade fully managed network to support it. Until recently, most network solutions (whether Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or, NB IoT, or even LTE private networks) did not provide the required capacity, coverage, control, and flexibility. 5G and in particular Private 5G is the first network standard to specifically acknowledge and address new network uses such as critical communications, real-time data analysis, and mass simultaneous IoT connections.

5G also incorporates recent networking revolutions such as NFV (Network functions Virtualization) and SDN (Software Defined Networks), making it much more familiar and similar to cloud-based IT services.

Porto de Aveiro (Altice) Case Study

Porto de Aveiro (Altice)

December 2020 – ASOCS’ Private 5G was deployed at the port. The initial implementation used a Private 5G connection for video recognition from a camera at a railway crossing and connection to the train drivers for safety. The initial implementation is planned to be expanded further into the port and logistics center, covering an indoor and outdoor campus
Lufthansa Industrial Solutions Case Study

Lufthansa Industrial Solutions

In January 2024 Hermes was deployed at the Lufthansa warehouse to test and develop use cases for Positioning over 5G in a real-world environment to show how the AI-based algorithms compensate for industrial environments. In the initial test a Lufthansa robot is tracked in their warehouse.

Healthcare Use Case

Healthcare

Other than the benefits of having a secure and truly private network, the use case for Positioning over 5G for indoor use is key. Statistics show that staff spend 10% longer time looking for equipment rather than patients with 16% of searches for equipment such as beds and wheelchairs being abandoned.

There is an additional benefit when it comes to Telemedicine, as seen with the Altice Telemedicine Case Study.

Fundacao Champalimaud Case Study

Fundacao Champalimaud

In March 2022 the first-ever breast cancer surgery was carried out using Private 5G technology connected two remote medical centers to enable telemedicine surgery.

The connection between Lisbon and Zaragoza (~900KM), enabled a renowned surgeon at the Breast Unit at the Champalimaud Clinical Center, to be in contact with a permanent audiovisual direct in real-time with the Spanish surgeon from the same unit, Rogelio Andrés-Luna.

Inventec Case Study

Inventec

In 2020, Inventec, a Taiwanese electronics manufacturer deployed ASOCS’s Private 5G at their main factory in the world’s first commercial deployment of a Stand-Alone Private 5G Network.

The initial implementation used P5G for connectivity between video cameras and AI on the edge for automated quality assurance. Wider use cases planned included and will include AMR connectivity and in particular the use of Private 5G connectivity for fixed assets, such as production line robotic arms, in order to enable flexi-floor production lines.

Entertainment Venues Use Case

Entertainment Venues

The use cases around venues are not centered only on public usage but on the management of the venues for operations management, security, and safety including video AI analysis, internal communications, and positioning of staff and equipment.

Ziehl Abegg Case Study

Ziehl Abegg

In November 2023 Hermes was deployed in the Ziehl Abegg innovation plant as a POC for Indoor Positioning over 5G for automated and manual forklifts in an industrial setting.

Sines Port Case Study

Sines Port

In February 2024 CYRUS® was deployed at Sines Port providing Private 5G connectivity for a 1.5KM port terminal for use cases including fire detection, health and safety, 5G mounted cameras, mobile forklifts, and stationary assets. The initial deployment is set to be expanded further in the future.

5G via Satellite Use Case

5G via Satellite

Utilizing satellite connectivity in order to provide a secure Private 5G Network that can be fully controlled by a central operations center. These include remote field operations, military, and ships.
